Using Video in theSpring

Video can be linked to or embedded in your course sites in theSpring in a number of ways. Here are a few of the most common video streaming sources along with instructions on how to make use of them in your course sites.

 

Alexander Street Video

1. To embed videos from Alexander Street in a course site, start by going to the content module where you’d like to place the video. Then select Upload/Create > Create a File.

2. Give the new file a title and in the HTML edit box, click on the Insert Stuff icon, and choose Alexander Street Video.

3. From there you should be able to search Alexander Street for the video you would like to embed.

Panopto

1. Start by navigating to the content area where you would like to embed an Ensemble video. Click on Upload/Create > Create a File.

2. Give the new file a title and in the HTML edit box, click on the Insert Stuff icon, and choose Panopto Video.

3. You may at this point be prompted to log in to Panopto using your Skidmore credentials. Once logged in, you will be able to select the video to be embedded, click on the green Insert button, then click on the blue Insert button, and then Save and Close.

 

 

 

Kanopy

1. First find the film in Skidmore’s Kanopy database. Select the video you would like to make available, click the Share button, and copy the Share link.

2. In theSpring, navigate to the course and content area where you would like to make the Kanopy film available. Click on Upload/Create > Create a Link.

3. Give the link a title, paste in the Share link that was copied from Kanopy, and check the box to Open as External Resource. Then click Create.

Swank

1. First find the film in Skidmore’s Swank database. Select the video you would like to make available, click Share and Copy Direct Link.

2. In theSpring, navigate to the course and content area where you would like to make the Swank film available. Click on Upload/Create > Create a Link.

3. Give the link a title and paste in the Link that was copied from Swank into the URL field. Then paste in this additional code before the link “https://lib-proxy01.skidmore.edu/login?url=”. The complete URL should look something like this:

https://lib-proxy01.skidmore.edu/login?url= https://digitalcampus.swankmp.net/skidmore372731/watch/4DBDAF7644703E32?referrer=direct

Check the box to Open as External Resource. Then click Create.

 

YouTube

1. Start by navigating to the content area where you would like to embed an YouTube video. Click on Upload/Create > Create a File.

2. Give the new file a title and in the HTML edit box, click on the Insert Stuff icon, and choose YouTube.

3. In the window that appears, you can search YouTube for the video you would like to embed. Once you’ve found the video, click on it, and then select Next at the bottom. On the screens that follow, click Insert, and finally Save and Close.

Other Video Sources

Video from other content providers can often be made available via theSpring, assuming the content is not hidden behind a firewall that requires a login. Video content on the web will often have a share option, which will allow the user to copy either the link or embed code. It is easiest to copy the link, then navigate to your course site, the appropriate content area, and then click on Upload/Create > Create a Link.
