Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling is the practice of combining narrative with digital content, including images, sound, and video, to create a short movie. Sophisticated digital stories can be interactive movies that include highly produced audio and visual effects, but a set of slides with corresponding narration or music constitutes a basic digital story. Digital stories can be instructional, persuasive, historical, or reflective (ELI, 2007).

Digital Video Projects

Since 2006, LEDS  has consulted with faculty on a range of approaches to incorporate digital video projects into classroom assignments. Video projects expose students to technology, collaborative and visual learning experiences. Our project planning and development workshops are designed and customized for community members with little to no background in video production and cover the essentials to help learners to:

  • identify a theme
  • create a storyboard and narrative
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of collaborative team members
  • operate camera hardware, microphones, and lighting accessories
  • use video editing software to organize content, insert transitions, add captions, voice-over and music
  • produce a short final video in a format that is easily accessible by the intended audience

Audio Production Projects

Audio production skills are a necessity for holistic technological fluency. Capturing and manipulating sound is a vital element of both videography and audio-exclusive projects.

LEDS can help students learn how to use Audacity to record and edit projects, as well best practices for interviewing and podcasting.

LEDS also offers our recording studio in Library Room 222 as a space that is quiet and free from distractions. If you would like to use this space, please contact Aaron or Ben well ahead of time so that we can reserve the room for you.

LEDS can help students:identify a theme

  • create a script and tone
  • understand the roles and responsibilities of collaborative team members
  • capture audio strategically by understanding the interplay of external microphone choice, real-time monitoring, and environment
  • utilize audio editing software to record sound, reposition and edit clips, improve volume consistency and clarity, add effects, and insert music
  • produce a podcast or similar polished recording in a format that is easily accessible by the intended audience
  • use AI transcription software such as Dragon Dictate to generate captions and transcripts of ¬†interviews

My students learned how to make history alive and captivating with the iMovie and videography workshops, which were integrated seamlessly into the class thanks to the staff at Academic Technologies.¬† These workshops gave the classroom a whole new dimension and offered students exciting vistas of what they can accomplish in a history class.”
